" Now I have a mentor through the CPDM. This is a new relationship and I don’t know where it will take me. I am thankful for the time and knowledge she shares with me. Learning is a journey!"

I learned about nursing with my little brother, Christopher.  He was born with Pierre Roban Syndrome and spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital.  He required several surgeries and we had nurses that came to our home frequently to help us care for him.  I was very impressed with their compassion and knowledge as a young teen.  They were my first mentors.

I lived in a rural area and began my nursing career at the Associated Degree level.  One of my nursing instructors was also a pediatric nurse practitioner.  She spoke of getting up early to do homework.  She shared with us her struggles with finding time to do school assignments, to work and to manage a home life so she could do the type of care she had always wanted to.  She was my second mentor and role model.

I was able to complete my BSN by doing courses one night a week through an outreach program that brought the instructors closer to my "neck of the woods".  When an outreach program for a MSN came along I signed up. I moved in the middle of the program and didn’t finish.  I thought I was done with my education, but now I am finishing my dream of getting my MSN.

My focus is nursing education and I am very excited about the opportunities I will have in the future to make nursing at Michigan everything I know it can be.  Now I have a mentor through the Center for Professional Development & Mentoring,(CPDM). This is a new relationship and I don’t know where it will take me.  I am thankful for the time and knowledge my mentor shares with me. Learning is a journey!
